  • madara haul

    I am so so impressed.

okay so I saw madara on Naturisimo (now oh my cream) and fell in love with the idea of it. But it was out of my price range, unfortunately.

luckily I am a bit of a bargain hunter and scoured the net for deals. I found an outlet (and also madara do offer sales from time to time) and decided to treat myself. Since I already had three of their highlighters (post to come soon) I grabbed a few other things I wanted to try including:

    • Lipsticks
    • liquid tint
    • the icons minis set

can I just say as a girlie recovering from a nasty bit of dermatitis on the lips and trying woefully so many gorgeous skincare and make up brands that madara has it!

the shade range is limited but the formula is very creamy and they are very pigmented. Despite having shades that cater for lighter skin girls I would say their lipstick range would look great on a lot of skin tones.

my new favourite is “magma”, a gorgeous brick red which to me looks almost deep coral on the lips and I have slightly darker lips being of Indian descent. Such a gorgeous summery colour and it is not drying. I would imagine you have to reapply quite frequently though, as is normal with intensely hydrating lipsticks.

this feels great for an everyday red, that’s lighter than a true red and more wearable for the summer months.

their other line of lipsticks I adored, with a deep brown (perfect if you want a sophisticated yet grungy 90s inspired look), a cool and warm pink nude, and a rust red with shimmer (ideal for winter parties).

the colour payoff is again, perfect for even slightly deeper skin tones and I would say the pink nudes are absolutely a perfect “my lips but better” shade on me, which I love. The formula is soft and velvety and the colour is buildable but reasonably opaque.

they’ve perfected the art of a shade range that’s staples and offering both cool and warm toned options.

and can we just look at these from the four swatches because the cases are stunning…

they’re have weight to them because they’re metallic and feel so luxe in your hand.

okay now on to the liquid tint.

I used to back in the day wear a tinted moisturiser when I think I was wearing nothing. But that kind of weightless no-make up- make up is what I prefer on a daily basis and now in the later part of my 30s I have no time for make up that isn’t loaded with skincare.

this liquid tint, oh my god! It smells like juniper, first off which is a deliciously botanical smell but juniper is a natural astringent and anti bacterial and anti fungal. So if you want to wear a tint that will keep your skin clear, this might be the thing.

Processed with Lensa with CA6 filter

it says it enhances the skin but the description falls very short of the potent list of skincare actives and ingredients.

jojoba is super hydrating and penetrates the skin allowing lipid based actives to easily follow. Aloe soothes and smoothes, shea butter conditions, rosewater tones and brightens, calendula brightens and enriches, algae supports cell renewal, chanomile soothes, and lactic acid gently exfoliates…..

that’s not all of them. It’s a skin perfecting, anti-aging, anti-pollutant, clearing powerhouse with a really light warming golden tint. I’d be curious to see what the “moonflower” shade is by comparison.

I can see this being really useful for me just as a daily skin perfecter or even as a primer underneath another base. Video review to hit my TikTok soon!

    and finally….

    the icons value set.
I’ve been trying out a few different brands over the last two years and didn’t want to commit to fullsize. This little set came with four travel size products and two samples and I got to pick a shade range for base.

so far I have tried the micellar water and the cc cream.

I am looking forward to trying the aha mask and the retinol serum, so watch this space for more reviews, and I will cover the skin equal foundation over on TikTok next month.

the cc cream which as I logged on this morning to madara’s very first live on TikTok, was being showcased so I opened it in real time while watching which was nice. It smells delightfully of vanilla, and has an spf which makes it perfect for everyday wear.

unlike the tinting fluid, which will have an spf effect but is probably less than 10 so negligible, this has SPF15, enough to get from A to B. It’s plumping, antioxidant rich , complexion enhancing and evening, smoothing and also a barrier against pollution. It’s also got some solid anti-aging actives in there which I’m sure will leave the skin feeling and looking incredible over time.

when I put it on, it’s really giving glass skin and there’s no tickling or itching even after a few minutes which I can frequently get with less-quality products.

10/10, and the shade is good enough with a light to medium coverage.

it comes off easy with the micellar water.

all in all, a great haul and so lovely to try things from an organic beauty brand. Excited for more!

  • non-abrasive I promise

I recently decided to say goodbye to abrasive exfoliators for my face. I have sensitive skin at times and it doesn’t like harsh exfoliants.

so I had a look around. skincare has changed a lot since I worked in beauty and it’s been a minute, so I needed to read up on all the actives.

as a mixed race girlie I present as light-skinned but have some minor pigmentation that has started to come in as I enter my 30s. I asked a skincare consultant for one of my favourite organic brands ‘evolve’ and she said my best options for skin would be:

    • retinol
    • aha
    • vitimin c

after doing a little reading around I found that the synthesised versions of these components could be very harsh on skin and that retinoids did not play well with these other actives in the same sitting.

so I have collected a few products on varying degrees of “clean” beauty to try out and will explain each below:

    nip+fab

now I know this is the least “clean” of the bunch but uses naturally derived ingredients and a vegan formula. That being said I am on day two of using their glycolic acid (an aha) cleansing pads and my skin is absolutely glowing. I found mine on boots. I would note I’ve used nip+fab a lot in the past and been sent products to review from time to time and they’ve always been excellent, especially when you have a targeted skin concern. sometimes sacrificing a little perfectly organic for performance does the trick. I have seen an immediate reduction in my darker pigmented spots.
for a weekly boost I can recommend the bubble sheet mask.

    evolve

I routinely use their retinol gold mask and recently tried their aha brightening mask. Absolutely 10/10 on formulation, glass packaging and best of all have actives in quantities that don’t cause skin sensitivity or irritation. I love these masks and they form a part of my weekly routine over the face, neck and décolletage.

evolve are a fast-growing vegan and organic brand from the UK that really pack a punch and do a lot for skin that is starting to face aging concerns, so perfect for people in their 30s and beyond.

I have a couple more coming and I have tried some others but they just weren’t as good and these four products are must have.

if you want smoother, more even skin this is an immediate fix and I love it.

    health problems = cellulite

    ladies

    and gents

    but mostly ladies

let me share with you some pretty normal trials. cellulite. amirite?

I never had cellulite until my mid twenties when I was SA’d and I think they might have put thinning cream on my thighs as well, as if being drugged wasn’t enough – well it is.

I know I should put a trigger warning but I am not going to because I think it’s pretty normal for women to have had something slipped in their drink and if we don’t talk about it, then it continues unnoticed.

kidneys filter the blood. well, they filter the urine for usable nutrients and let all the toxic waste go to the bladder to excrete. when our bodies are flooded with any toxins, the organs responsible for this filtration (usually kidneys and liver) are unable to do so and so the poison circulates back into the body.

but we have one last reserve – fat storage. our clever bodies will push out these toxic liquids away from our vital organs, usually into our arms and legs and then suspend them in a fatty liquid. since this is an emergency operation and we do not want to metabolise this with the muscles the storage is less than uniform. hence, the lumps and bumps of cellulite and edema.

that orange peel says that you survived. self inflicted, or likely also not, this tells the story of your success in besting whatever happened to you.

in Chinese medicine you look for foods with similar physical properties to the organ you wish to heal.

for cellulite it’s a difficult one because you will have to over time metabolise everything that’s stored which can be a painful process that essentially leaves you with a years long illness as a little bit of poison is metabolised at a time.

but vitimin c can help and is known as a powerhouse skincare ingredient that helps all other ingredients absorb.

so this is sort of a diy and sort of not. another key mineral in metabolising and recovering in the muscular system is magnesium, and so we come to the perfect muscle and fat recovery soak.

all you need are some orange peels (so maybe it’s time to treat yourself to that new juicer) and bath salts. And a nut milk bag or muslin.

simply add washed orange 🍊 peels to the nut milk bag and throw into a nice hot bath. And add a generous helping of salts. I’ve linked my faves below.

and I also hope that now every time you see a woman with a little dimpling you see someone strong and someone vulnerable and someone who deserves your compassion and love ❤️‍🩹

  • i overreacted but not really

I think when you are being bullied by mods or the staff on a social media platform it’s reasonable to want to leave.

however my loving partner was getting annoyed I wasn’t commenting on his posts anymore. two days? apparently too many.

oh to be a social media wife.

anyway I come back bearing gifts. the hill that I will die on is that you do not need to buy an exfoliator. this is my all over diy exfoliant that I use for an ‘everything shower’. I prep my scalp with it which encourages growth and healthy follicles, and I scrub my whole body.

I have sensitive skin and I find that most granular exfoliants are too abrasive on my skin. not so with this.

so, I’m going to ask here, who loves coffee? because that’s the main ingredient- used coffee grounds. so if you like a nice cuppa at home this is a great way to justify your caffeine habit as it doubles as a way to improve the appearance of cellulite and encourage hair growth!

also it’s super easy to make.

    recipe:

    • used coffee grounds
    • coconut oil (but any oil will do can be olive, beef tallow etc)
    • cinnamon powder
    • 1 drop peppermint essential oil
    • 1 drop rosemary essential oil
    • 1/2 tsp finely milled black salt

basically melt the oil and add the other ingredients. massage into wet skin, leave a minute and then wash with soap and shampoo as normal.

when I tell you my hair has never grown as thick and luscious, nor my skin as glowing I’m not joking. and I already had all these ingredients.

some people might want to substitute the salt because the kalar namak (black salt) has a distinctive sulphurous smell.

don’t. basically that sulphur helps by killing viruses. so if you want to keep your skin super clean you need to add a little of this salt, which others are not as effective at. also the finely milled black salt like this feels finer and not as abrasive as other salts like pink or sea salt.

either way you should be exfoliating your skin at least once per week and this is the best one I’ve ever found!

    why cinnamon?

I’ve been contemplating cinnamon. in most witch-y traditions cinnamon is a vital ingredient for wealth, but do you know why? not only a natural sweetener but a powerful and gentle anti-fungal and anti-parasitical this is useful in your food and applied topically.

and as for the rosemary this is a well known remedy now for hair growth, but also kills parasites on the skin, yeast and bacteria- as does peppermint.

keep that skin clean and wealthy, where health is the new wealth 😘

super sad to say that I was being bullied for commenting in a way that was a little negative towards men but not unusual for anyone online.

after watching the past few days in horror and seeing posts on TikTok from men for men about how to break a woman’s ego and tear her down and destroy her basically I am done with TikTok. It’s not a safe space for women. my accounts are there and my content was going to be there but I appealed and they refused so I am done.

so I was like, cool I will just set up on Pinterest. was immediately signed out where someone stole the name “beautyboo” and renamed my handle with numbers after and then blocked my profile so I couldn’t see. I have reported their page.

have you ever had a product so good there’s just never going to be an alternative?

lord have I tried to find one cheaper on my current budget but it’s no way, absolutely not.

this one ticks all my boxes in clean beauty. it is functionally perfect, vegan, organic, sustainable and smells like omg 😨

picture this. the year is 2020. lockdown was a nonsense I had been stuck in this post-millennial transience (aka no home) and ended up on my dads sofa. nightmare guys. anyway so lack of bed and privacy aside, I got stuck back into bodycare as nomadic life can sometimes rob you of the time and funds to properly look after yourself.

i had always wanted to try products from aveda but hadn’t quite managed to justify it to myself. but 2020 was the year. I didn’t even have my own freaking bedroom and I needed something so comforting.

let me just show you the before and after:

    my crusty hand before

    are you serious????

look I have poor circulation and I have nice hands but they dry easily. in winter they crack and recently I sustained chemical burns from a bad ecover washing up liquid. so the skin is in poor shape and it’s very sore. most perfumed creams hurt.

this one smells like spiced oranges and it’s gentle. the cream is thick and a little tacky but overall not greasy.

so I first discovered their foot cream which, maybe you can’t see a difference but I do. daily putting on this cream out the shower has a hugely positive effect on my mental health and it helps to prevent cracked heels. my foot transformation isn’t as dramatic as the hands because they aren’t quite so hardworking but, you can see the skin is smoother.

    before

    after

when I say my skin feels soft, fresh and buttery I mean it.

the foot relief cream has a botanically herbaceous and peppermint scent and it just feels like you’ve given your feet the best ever treat.

one of life’s little luxuries I hope I don’t ever have to be without and I stock up every sale to make sure this is the case.

when I say these are must haves I mean it!

    you’re welcome

  • everything comes down to 💩

    contains affiliate links*
can anyone remember where that song is from? I cannot but it’s super appropriate.

I believe so strongly that beauty starts from the inside. we can cover up the evidence with make up, but it should be there to enhance and play on or with, not necessarily to cover. at least on a day-to-day basis.

I’ve been study the digestive system extensively and particularly the balance between two powerhouses in the process – the small intestine and the pancreas.

now the small intestine produces enzymes that break down proteins amongst other things but these are blocked if you are. so the pancreas compensates and releases extra to try and get things moving. this pushes you to reach for the sugar-y stuff because you are now operating with waaaay too much insulin and anything out of place in the body and in excess is toxic. even our own hormones.

every time we poop 💩 we also relieve ourselves of the microbiome that keeps our mucosa, the lining of our gut, healthy and able to lubricate the mass of “used food” as it’s on its way out.

a hole or thinning of this mucosa causes constipation, leading to infection as toxic sludge leaks in through the gut and parasites have a ground for breeding.

don’t panic. see we are resilient af. you just need to include in your diet every day:

    • at least 2 litres of fresh water (as a base and other liquids on top)
    • pre-biotics (provide the necessary food for your friendly gut bacteria)
    • pro-biotics (the little symbiotic organisms that work with your immune system to crush the 🦠)
    • fibre (bulk food that is insoluble, non digestible and you 💩 out)

and time for the affiliate links. prebiotics include starchy foods like potato or banana, basically foods that have slow release starchy carbs. You can also drink aloe vera juice which can be soothing to a sore tummy as well.

and then probiotics? you can do what I do which is have gut-healthy live greek yoghurt, fermented foods like sauerkraut or pickles (I’ll do a post on how to ferment your own veg later and link it here, don’t worry) and physically taking probiotics daily.

if you have sustained any damage to your gut through just not knowing this easy way to take care of it, don’t worry: you can heal. I used to be 100% vegan, but I found that bone broth is so effective in helping the gut to heal. The low fat, high in animal collagen does wonders like no other. here’s a couple of options:

and as for fibre guys just eat your veggies! but if you need a little help psyllium husk is a thickener you can use in soups and sauces. just make sure you hydrate yourself really well when you cook with it 💧

a little goes a long way. I recommend making a gel first and then add to your soups and stews.

do you think the girlies with the giant tumblers are stupid? no they’re smart. 1.2l of water in one cup so if you drink two per day you have done what you need to do. I’ve linked two viral brands

you know guys if you follow all these steps your skin will clear up, you’ll digest food better and probably you’ll feel more beautiful.

& isn’t that the first step?

  • nails without nasties

    *this post contains affiliate links

    don’t get me started

wow. so I was digging through a box of old nail varnishes that I have been determined to do something with. recently there’s been a slew of “low tox” polishes on the market that I tried including one from nailberry (you can get the exact shade here*) and others but I wanted to give an alternative, because as I am in the middle of this sculpture I can say with 100% certainty we should not be putting any of these paints on our fingertips.

oh my gosh. like how have we all been collectively brainwashed into thinking that, however low in toxins they are, any kind of solvent should be soaking into our fingernails?

let me tell you something about the human body. none of it is impermeable. we are made of mostly water and it all flows and opens into all of it. you put poison in one part and it will get around to all the other parts.

I know, and when you put it like that it is so painfully obvious and yet for 20 years of my life I was covering my nails in toxic paint and wondering why I struggle with poor circulation? oh I wonder….

anyway cuties here is an awesome alternative. if you like your nails natural and aren’t into fakes you can get nail wraps. still made of gels but it’s pre-cured and that makes a hell of a difference.

wraps come in a card wallet delivered to your door, and are essentially stickers that you stick to each nail and then cut to size.

it requires a soak to remove and looks good on for about ten days. at around £10 a manicure this is (I think) great value, and kind to the body and environment.

you have to remove them very slowly and carefully to avoid peeling the nail itself but once you get the hang of it there’s no dry time and they even do pedicures!

I’m sold this was a hit from the first home-delivered mani 💅

and I’ve applied to be an ambassador with them but until then this is just a recommendation so head to Glaize.co to see what works for you 🥰

  • i bought a dupe and I’m not proud of it

    *contains affiliate links
    start strong I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

    it’s confession time…..

I have always been erring more on the side of not buying fake or obvious beauty dupes for obvious reasons. which I will now explain in case it’s not obvious:

    • you don’t know if the product is the same or just ripped off
    • it’s very likely inferior or off
    • and less important to people is its copyright infringement which is mean

that being said I was in a low moment money and mood-wise and the only thing I could see on my FYP was that silly collagen wrapping mask and in every single version of it.

at the time I didn’t have £30 to drop on a single product (nor do I now but I am an excellent sale and bargain hunter) but I decided to give it a go.

so the original was by medicube (you can purchase here*), an American K-Beauty brand that promises high end products on a mid to budget price that really do work. their formulation of this product is vegan and comes with a spatula to apply.

mine is quite clearly a rip off. though the packaging is very similar (it looks the same bottle) the logo is different, boasting the name “ilyogi” as the brand.

I did do some digging – there are a couple of Korean beauty brands that wholesale products that people can white label and drop ship from their warehouses. this quite possibly could be that as the packaging (not the outer box but the inner tube) is pretty exact to the medicube one when you buy from these factories you can choose to buy a pre-made product or formulate your own. they all have MOQs that are very high but they have tiers of price per item and the higher the quantity, obviously the lower the price per item. I believe that some of them will as a standard make a set amount of the item whatever you commission and sell the rest as overstock, altering it ever so slightly as to avoid copyright violations or law infringement. so unless you choose to buy all the stock in one go, those spares will be labelled and sold elsewhere with an almost identical formulation.

this has a noticeable strong floral scent that I was worried to put on my skin and actually reminded me of a wrapping mask from childhood.

however, I did it. I slathered my face in serum like it was going out of style and covered in emollient, just topping up with the mask itself. it takes about 15 minutes to dry and then after that you sleep with it (if you can) or leave it on and peel off for a couple of hours if you cannot. this one came with no spatula or brush and was messy as £&@#

    oh my glass skin.

it really, really worked. I am ashamed to say I spend about £5 for 3 tubes and yes, I’ve used them. will I buy them again? unlikely, I feel completely guilty but wow, if you want an instant boost overnight glow up any version of the mask is probably going to work for you. me, I’ll be saving my pennies for the medicube version.

and for me this is a part of a larger conversation around dupes and fakes and whether a brand means anything. here’s my take- as a consumer we always want the best value possible, but that doesn’t always mean the cheapest. what looks like an identical copy doesn’t always mean the materials or how they were obtained is identical. and more than that, designing a product takes time and energy, training and money. fashion and beauty houses employ in store and online employees, as well as warehouse workers, factory workers and drivers and many more all over the world and that costs. so yeah, fakes cost less because they’re ripping off the finished version of a product that took time and money to develop, as well as anything expended on marketing and building that brand to get there in the first place. if you’re not going to ever buy from that brand maybe it doesn’t matter, but for me having worked for a big beauty brand in the past (and more than one) I get how much goes on behind the scenes that a consumer would just have no idea about.

what do you think? do you buy dupes? what have you had that was an amazing copy of a viral product?

    love,

    beautyboo x
