  • foundation is a scam

liquid foundation is the biggest scam ever, especially if you’re an ambiguous ethnicity mixed race girlie and you go through four skin tones throughout the year.

you waste time, money and product – and end up throwing away more foundation than you use.

This winter I found the answer, once again after a bad experience with an ethical, organic make up brand who I had a couple of good products from, but ultimately was sent faulty products and given such bad service!

I make my own. There are two ways that you can do this – you can mix pigment (either powder foundation that works for you or your own blend) with your favourite serum/lotion/moisturiser, or make your own creams also.

I hate wasting things but storing powders risks less bacterial/fungal contamination and you can simply add or balance with other pigments to create your perfect shade.

All colours can be created through balancing red, green, blue, white and black but if you want to cheat you can buy a mineral powder that suits your skin as well as some colour-correcting pigments in white (titanium dioxide), lavender, olive green and peach. If you get your deepest colour (aka your summer colour) it becomes very easy to take it to a lighter shade. Right now, I simply add white pigment in a small pot and then blend with my preferred cream base.

For winter, for me, the only way to keep my skin feeling luscious and beautiful is a home-made tallow balm. The basic recipe is:

    • organic tallow
    • Jojoba oil
    • castor oil
    • Shea butter
    • coconut oil
    • Vit e
    • Olive-m (or vegetal) wax
    • Hydrolat/hydrosol (I like rose geranium, orange blossom and lavender)
    • Eco preservative

This becomes the base. you can make it more oily, or add more of the water-based ingredients to make it more liquidy. Mine has a creamy balm consistency that acts a barrier on the skin and protects against the cold and dryness from indoor heating.

If you want to get more fancy, I add a bunch more things to make my creams anti-aging as I can see 40 on the horizon and I’m going to invest in my skin!

    I like to add:

    • algae oil
    • Papaya oil
    • Papaya glycerol
    • Raspberry seed oil
    • Liftonin
    • Q10

If you don’t like the smell of tallow you can substitute very easily with lanolin, and if you’re a vegan you could use cocoa butter instead but it doesn’t have the same impact as a cream that heals the skin barrier. After experimenting with skincare my whole life, I have never found a vegan alternative that can heal skin better than tallow or lanolin.

While you don’t need to add essential oils, I like to add some ones that are known for their beautifying, astringent or anti/aging properties, such as:

    • frankincense
    • Rose
    • Myrrh
    • Lavender
    • Juniper

A little goes a long way – remember that you are adding them for their skincare benefit and not their scent, and that too much might burn your skin. A couple of drops is plenty!

With your cream, once made, you simply take a pea-sized amount onto your hand and blend with however much pigment you want.

You’ll get a light coverage that is also skin perfecting- great for everyday.

You could even experiment and make a cheek balm, or use mica to add a shimmer and highlight.

    What do you think?

Will you make your own foundation?

individual pigments are often sold through cosmetics companies and wholesalers as iron oxides. Be sure they are cosmetic grade before applying to your skin!

  • intimate cleanse

I think it goes without saying but all ingredients should be organic (where possible), with no additives and of the highest quality available

might as well hit the ground running.

for those sensitive to medication or medicated treatments, this is a balancing and cleansing cream you can make fresh and use on your vulva and (if the ingredients are sterile) internally. It must be made fresh, daily.

this is anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, hydrating, pre and probiotic.

    ingredients

    • saline solution
    • kalar namak
    • aloe vera
    • natural bio yoghurt or kefir
    • castor oil
    • coconut oil

Mix a little of each together to form a cream and apply as a cream on the vulva or insert using a disposable dropper as a suppository.

Wash off externally and allow for any internal cream to naturally leave with discharge.

Remember. This is no substitute for medical care if needed, but will help cleanse maintain in the short term (up to a week) the vaginal flora.

tip: for extra hydration you can add a little hyaluronic acid.

  • madara haul

    I am so so impressed.

okay so I saw madara on Naturisimo (now oh my cream) and fell in love with the idea of it. But it was out of my price range, unfortunately.

luckily I am a bit of a bargain hunter and scoured the net for deals. I found an outlet (and also madara do offer sales from time to time) and decided to treat myself. Since I already had three of their highlighters (post to come soon) I grabbed a few other things I wanted to try including:

    • Lipsticks
    • liquid tint
    • the icons minis set

can I just say as a girlie recovering from a nasty bit of dermatitis on the lips and trying woefully so many gorgeous skincare and make up brands that madara has it!

the shade range is limited but the formula is very creamy and they are very pigmented. Despite having shades that cater for lighter skin girls I would say their lipstick range would look great on a lot of skin tones.

my new favourite is “magma”, a gorgeous brick red which to me looks almost deep coral on the lips and I have slightly darker lips being of Indian descent. Such a gorgeous summery colour and it is not drying. I would imagine you have to reapply quite frequently though, as is normal with intensely hydrating lipsticks.

this feels great for an everyday red, that’s lighter than a true red and more wearable for the summer months.

their other line of lipsticks I adored, with a deep brown (perfect if you want a sophisticated yet grungy 90s inspired look), a cool and warm pink nude, and a rust red with shimmer (ideal for winter parties).

the colour payoff is again, perfect for even slightly deeper skin tones and I would say the pink nudes are absolutely a perfect “my lips but better” shade on me, which I love. The formula is soft and velvety and the colour is buildable but reasonably opaque.

they’ve perfected the art of a shade range that’s staples and offering both cool and warm toned options.

and can we just look at these from the four swatches because the cases are stunning…

they’re have weight to them because they’re metallic and feel so luxe in your hand.

okay now on to the liquid tint.

I used to back in the day wear a tinted moisturiser when I think I was wearing nothing. But that kind of weightless no-make up- make up is what I prefer on a daily basis and now in the later part of my 30s I have no time for make up that isn’t loaded with skincare.

this liquid tint, oh my god! It smells like juniper, first off which is a deliciously botanical smell but juniper is a natural astringent and anti bacterial and anti fungal. So if you want to wear a tint that will keep your skin clear, this might be the thing.

Processed with Lensa with CA6 filter

it says it enhances the skin but the description falls very short of the potent list of skincare actives and ingredients.

jojoba is super hydrating and penetrates the skin allowing lipid based actives to easily follow. Aloe soothes and smoothes, shea butter conditions, rosewater tones and brightens, calendula brightens and enriches, algae supports cell renewal, chanomile soothes, and lactic acid gently exfoliates…..

that’s not all of them. It’s a skin perfecting, anti-aging, anti-pollutant, clearing powerhouse with a really light warming golden tint. I’d be curious to see what the “moonflower” shade is by comparison.

I can see this being really useful for me just as a daily skin perfecter or even as a primer underneath another base. Video review to hit my TikTok soon!

    and finally….

    the icons value set.
I’ve been trying out a few different brands over the last two years and didn’t want to commit to fullsize. This little set came with four travel size products and two samples and I got to pick a shade range for base.

so far I have tried the micellar water and the cc cream.

I am looking forward to trying the aha mask and the retinol serum, so watch this space for more reviews, and I will cover the skin equal foundation over on TikTok next month.

the cc cream which as I logged on this morning to madara’s very first live on TikTok, was being showcased so I opened it in real time while watching which was nice. It smells delightfully of vanilla, and has an spf which makes it perfect for everyday wear.

unlike the tinting fluid, which will have an spf effect but is probably less than 10 so negligible, this has SPF15, enough to get from A to B. It’s plumping, antioxidant rich , complexion enhancing and evening, smoothing and also a barrier against pollution. It’s also got some solid anti-aging actives in there which I’m sure will leave the skin feeling and looking incredible over time.

when I put it on, it’s really giving glass skin and there’s no tickling or itching even after a few minutes which I can frequently get with less-quality products.

10/10, and the shade is good enough with a light to medium coverage.

it comes off easy with the micellar water.

all in all, a great haul and so lovely to try things from an organic beauty brand. Excited for more!

    love,
